১৯৬৯ সালের পয়লা মার্চ হাওড়া স্টেশন থেকে নয়া দিল্লীর দিকে ছুটে গিয়েছিল দেশের প্রথম রাজধানী এক্সপ্রেস। দিনটি ছিল শনিবার। তারপর পেরিয়ে গেছে ৫৩ বছরেরও বেশি সময়। পরবর্তীকালে ভারতীয় রেলে অনেক এক্সপ্রেস ট্রেন যুক্ত হয়েছে ঠিকই, তবে রাজধানী এক্সপ্রেসের গৌরব আজও অক্ষুন্ন। প্রথম রাজধানীর সেই যাত্রার পিছনে ভারতীয় রেলের পরীক্ষা-নিরীক্ষা কিছু কম ছিল না।
ষাটের দশকের শেষের দিক থেকেই ৪০০ থেকে ৫০০ কিলোমিটার প্রতি ঘণ্টা গতিতে ট্রেন চালানোর লক্ষ্যে উন্নত দেশগুলিতে পরিবহনের উপর যথেষ্ট গবেষণা ও বিনিয়োগ করা হয়েছিল। সেই সময়ে অনেক উন্নয়নশীল দেশেও ট্রেনের গতি নিদেনপক্ষে ১৫০ কিলোমিটার প্রতি ঘণ্টায় বাড়ানোর নিরন্তর চেষ্টা অব্যাহত ছিল। তখন ভারতীয় রেল দ্বারা পরিচালিত কয়েকটি পরীক্ষা ও কোনরকম বড় মাপের বিনিয়োগ ছাড়াই এই ট্রেন যাত্রা সফল হয়েছিল। ১৪৪৫ কিলোমিটার যাত্রা ১৭ ঘন্টায় সমাপ্তির মাধ্যমে ভারতীয় রেলের এই সাফল্য অর্জিত হয়।
সত্তরের দশকে যাত্রী পরিষেবার ক্ষেত্রে ব্রডগেজে ভারতীয় রেলে সর্বোচ্চ অপারেটিং গতি ছিল সাধারণত ৯৬ কিলোমিটার প্রতি ঘণ্টা এবং পণ্য পরিবহণের ক্ষেত্রে ৭২ কিলোমিটার প্রতি ঘণ্টা। আর যাত্রী পরিষেবার ক্ষেত্রে মিটার গেজে গতি ছিল ৭২ কিমি প্রতি ঘন্টা এবং পণ্য পরিবহণে ৫০ কিমি প্রতি ঘন্টা।
প্রসঙ্গতঃ উল্লেখযোগ্য যে প্রথম রাজধানী এক্সপ্রেস বিকেল ৫টায় ছেড়ে পরের দিন সকাল ১০:২০ মিনিটে দিল্লীতে গিয়ে পৌঁছায়। তখন ট্রেনের টিকিটের ভাড়া ছিল এসি স্লিপার কোচে ৩০০ টাকা এবং এসি চেয়ার কারে ১০০ টাকা।
