গুজরাট: পুলিশি হেফাজতে বন্দি মৃত্যুর ঘটনায় অভিযুক্ত প্রাক্তন IPS অফিসার সঞ্জীব ভাটকে গুজরাটের আদালত যাবজ্জীবন কারাদণ্ডের সাজা ঘোষনা করলেন। এরপর তিনি তার মামলার আবেদন সুপ্রিম কোর্টে করলেন, সেখানেও খারিজ করে দেয়। সেই সপ্তাহের মধ্যে জামনগর সেশন কোর্ট এ সপ্তাহের মধ্যে এই সাজা শোনালেন এই মামলায় দোষী সাব্যস্ত আরও ৬ পুলিশকর্মীর সাজা এখনও ঘোষণা হয়নি। যখন এই মামলায় দোষী সাব্যস্ত আরও ৬ পুলিশকর্মীর সাজা এখনও ঘোষণা হয়নি। যখন এই মামলা দায়ের হয় তখন গুজরাটের জামনগরের ACP ছিলেন সঞ্জীব ভাট।
তিনি জাম যোধপুর শহরে সাম্প্রদায়িক হিংসার ঘটনায় প্রায় ১৫০ জনকে আটক করেছিলেন। প্রভুদাস বৈষ্ণবী হাসপাতাল থেকে মুক্তি পাওয়ার হাসপাতালে মৃত্যু হয় তার হাসপাতালে মৃত্যু হয়। তার দাদা FIR দায়ের করে অভিযোগ করেন, সঞ্জীব ভাট ও ৬ পুলিশকর্মী হেফাজতে থাকাকালীন প্রভুদাসের উপর প্রবল অত্যাচারের ফলে তার মৃত্যু হয়েছে। ২০১১ সালে অনুমতি না-নিয়ে ডিউটিতে গরহাজির থাকা এবং সরকারি গাড়ির অপব্যবহারের অভিযোগে বরখাস্ত করা হয় সঞ্জীবকে। এরপর ২০১৫ সালের অগস্টে তাঁকে অপসারণ করা হয়। অপসারিত হওয়ার পরের মাসেই সাম্প্রদায়িক হিংসায় বিজেপি সভাপতি অমিত শাহের ভূমিকা নিয়ে অভিযোগ তুলে পিটিশন দাখিল করেন তিনি। তার আভিযোগ ওই ঘটনায় গুজরাটের তত্কালীন মুখ্যমন্ত্রী নরেন্দ্র মোদীও যুক্ত ছিলেন। শীর্ষ আদালত নিযুক্ত বিশেষ তদন্তকারী দল সঞ্জীবের অভিযোগ খারিজ করে দেয়।
