কলকাতার সবচেয়ে বিখ্যাত কফি হাউস শাখাটি কলেজ স্ট্রিটের এক, যা “কলেজ স্ট্রিটের কফি হাউস” নামেও পরিচিত। যদিও কলেজ স্ট্রিট কফি হাউস নামে পরিচিত, এই শাখার প্রকৃতপক্ষে বঙ্কিম চ্যাটার্জি স্ট্রিট।
কলেজ স্ট্রিটে কফি হাউসের ইতিহাসটি অ্যালবার্ট হলের সন্ধান পাওয়া যেতে পারে, যা ১৮৭৬ সালের এপ্রিল মাসে প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়েছিল। পরে, কফি বোর্ড ১৯৪২ সালে আলবার্ট হল থেকে কফি যৌথ শুরু করার সিদ্ধান্ত নেয়। রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর ও সুভাষ চন্দ্র বোস সহ উল্লেখযোগ্য নাগরিকরা এই জায়গাটিতে ঘন ঘন আসতেন ।
১৯৪৭ সালে, কেন্দ্রীয় সরকার স্থানটির নাম “কফি হাউসে” বদল করে। এই স্থানটি কবি, শিল্পী, সাহিত্য এবং শিল্প ও সংস্কৃতির মানুষদের জন্য একটি সভা স্থান হয়ে ওঠে। কফি হাউস তার আড্ডা সেশনের জন্য বিখ্যাত এবং বিভিন্ন রাজনৈতিক ও সাংস্কৃতিক ব্যক্তিত্ব এবং আন্দোলনের প্রজনন স্থান হিসাবে বিখ্যাত। একটি বিখ্যাত গান “কফি হাউস-এ সে আড্ডাটা আর নাই “, এই কফি হাউসে ভিত্তি করে, মান্না দে গেয়েছিলেন।
