গবেষণায় দেখা গেছে লাইকোপিন স্পার্ম কাউন্টকে ৭০ শতাংশ বাড়াতে সাহায্য করে। লাইকোপিনের কারণেই টমেটোর রঙ লাল হয়। এই আবিষ্কারের ফলে এবার সেই পুরুষেরা উপকৃত হবেন যারা এখনও বাবা হতে পারেননি। বন্ধ্যা পুরুষদের সাহায্যকারী একটি সংস্থা গবেষণা করে দেখছে যে পুরুষদের বেশি মাত্রায় লাইকোপিন দিলে তাদের বাবা হওয়ার সম্ভবনা বাড়ে কিনা।
ব্রিটেনের ইনর্ফাটাইল নেটওয়ার্কের প্রবক্তা ক্যারেন ব্যানেস জানিয়েছেন, তারা এই রিসার্চের ফলাফলকে ধনাত্মক ভাবেই নিচ্ছেন। এবার তারা এই গবেষণা করে দেখতে চান লাইকোপিনের ফলে পুরুষের উপকার হয় কিনা।
তিনি আরও জানান, আমাদের সমাজে বন্ধ্যাত্বের জন্য নারীদের দায়ী করা হয় কারণ নারীরাই বাচ্চার জন্ম দিয়ে থাকেন। কিন্তু বেশির ভাগ ক্ষেত্রে স্পার্মের ফাংশন বা কোয়ালিটির কারণে মহিলারা প্রেগনেন্ট হতে পারেননা।

এই গবেষণায় দেখা গেছে লাইকোপিন স্পার্ম কাউন্টের সঙ্গে স্পার্মের স্পীড বাড়িয়ে দেয়। এছাড়াও এটি খারাপ স্পার্মের পরিমাণ কমিয়ে দিতে সক্ষম। এর আগেই একটি পরীক্ষা থেকে জানা গেছে লাইকোপিন প্রোস্টেট সম্পর্কিত অসুস্থতাও দূর করে।
